Term 4, Week 1. Walt - Identify and use features of explanation writing.
What makes an effective leader? A true leader has a passion for a cause that is larger than they are, and their passion is leading others to do the right thing. Leaders have a lot of confidence because their confidence can help others have some confidence in themselves to do anything or be anything. To be an effective leader you have to be a good person, an effective leader would treat everyone with respect and would have good manners.
Firstly, a Leader's passion is being an effective leader. Well, some leaders have more than one passion, but they put a lot of hard work to be a good and effective leader. Leaders that have the passion to be good and effective cares about being a leader. And a Leader with a dream and a vision that will better society, or at least, some portion of it.
Secondly, Leaders with confidence can help others be more confident in a variety of situations. Like if your Leader or someone you follow that inspires you are very good at speaking in front of a large number of people and make it look so easy. Maybe one day their courage can help you have the courage to do the same. But not only that, Leaders have to be confident in themselves and others, so they can have confidence in others to help support them in whatever they're doing.
Lastly, being a respectful leader is one of the main things all leaders should be or have. All leaders have to have good manners, respect for everyone even if they don’t know them. An effective leader is always polite. Being respectful, kind, polite and nice makes you look like a very good person and it shows that you were brought up by your parents correctly.
All three points are very important to be an effective leader. Having a dream and a vision will help a better society if your passionate about doing the right things in being an effective leader. Having confidence in yourself so you can become or do whatever you like. Having good manners or respect towards everyone just makes you a good person. So, did any of these three points help? Would you like more information on, What makes an effective leader?
Task Description - This week we are practicing, Explanation Writing. Because next week Thursday we have our writing test and our main writing topic or genre is Explanation Writing. So this week we had to write about, What makes an effective leader? And I am a leader myself so I just took my three main points from what I know about what I have to do when I have to be a leader.

Around The World
Our Task was to create a digital learning object (D.L.O) We had to draw our backgrounds
on the Hyper studio, Hyper studio is like an app on the i mac's where you can draw, trace and animate. I only had enough time to draw 2 landmarks. When we inserted our drawings onto scratch we had to find a sprite (character) to code. Like how I chose the brown bear, and then I made it move to where I wanted to go. While I was coding I had to record a voice over, I explained some facts about the landmark and where the landmark is located in the world.
Daring Decimals
Its the last week of school and we learnt how to convert decimals and how to add
and subtract decimals. We also learnt how to change a fraction into a decimal then
into a percentage or a decimal into a fraction then to a percentage.

X-Country
Walt: structure a recount
Last week on Friday we had our cross country running race. It was really hot, but really muddy and wet. Have you ever done cross country before?
Before the year 6 girls raced we played games and chatted a lot. I was really nervous, but excited at the same time. I watched some of the little kid’s racing and it was interesting. I enjoyed playing hand games with my friends. I was happy seeing my Mum my aunty my nana and my sister coming to support me. Suddenly Mrs Nua came and called the year 6 girls to follow her to the start line. On Your Marks….. Get Set…... GO! The clapper went CLAP!
Near the finish line my friend Amelia was in front of me I wanted to gas her before we finish the race. I sprinted my hardest and boom I just got past and came 6th, Amelia came 7th. I was so happy because I completed the race. I went straight to the water station because I was thirsty, and then went to my mum and sister and said hi, they said that they were very proud of me.

Last week on Friday we had our cross country running race. It was really hot, but really muddy and wet. Have you ever done cross country before?

I sprinted my way around the first cone it was muddy and went all over my legs, SPLAT! I ran on the bike track and out of the gate we went. It was so muddy I thought my shorts were covered in mud. I found it hard running in the mud because my feet kept getting stuck. I was tired and exhausted I didn’t want to stop at all so I continued.

I learnt that I should not sprint in the start and jog then sprint the other half. I will do that next time or I will just practice more and sprint the whole way next year. I will also try harder so I can get closer to the person that’s in the lead.
Task Description: This is my recount about Pt England Cross Country. Room 7 had to make our writing interesting. Please Leave a positive comment below.

Castaway
Walt: Write from the 1st person.
Suddenly I got washed up a beach. I opened my eyes all I saw was a crab in front of my eyes, “AHHHHHHH” I screamed. I jumped up and ran far away. I saw my yellow boat washed up on the sand it was popped from the horrible waves and storm, I was scared I saw a beautiful beach. I felt lonely because it was silent, there was no noise at all.
I gathered just the things I needed, I grabbed my popped boat and dragged it up to a straight tall tree. I found some fronds and I grabbed them and put them on top of the boat I grabbed all of the fronds. I grabbed one tall straight stick I looked for a tree and laid the boat down next to the tree and I stabbed my stick in the ground. I placed the end of the boat on the top of the stick then I grabbed my fronds and placed them underneath my shelter for my bed. I had a rest and felt worried “what will happen” I said quietly to myself. I got up and used rocks to make a fire for my food I gathered the rocks in a pile
I came up with a great idea, I decided to find sticks and flax. I’m gonna use the sticks to make a ladder and use the flax to tie it together to hold. I will be using the ladder to get coconuts from the tree then I will have a long stick to poke the coconut for it to fall out. I looked for a stick I sharpened it so I can crack the coconut shell open, I used a rock to sharpen the stick. I’m gonna use my sharpened stick to catch my fish, I caught fish and had it for dinner. I found clean water and marked trees with my stick so I know where I am going, I used my coconut shell for my water.
I should use my feet to create a big signal saying HELP! So I did it I thought maybe I should get a good rest. I said to myself I will come back to my signal later and see if someone will at least see my HELP! I hope I get rescued off this island.
It’s been years rescue has not came, time passed and no clothes. I woke up hearing a weird sound I haven’t heard before, it was loud and sounded high. I rushed and to see if it was a rescue. I remembered it sounds like a chopper “YEA” I shouted I ran to my signal and yelled as loud as I could “HELP” “HELP” HELP” HELP”. The person in the chopper saw me. I saw that the chopper was a rescue chopper I jumped with excitement the chopper landed on my signal. The man that was driving the chopper said “Hey are you lost hop in my chopper and I will get you food” I said “Thanks man I was really shocking when I arrived at this island” I got rescued and was really happy I could have a shower I really wanted steak for dinner.
Task Description: I was really excited when I first found out what we will be writing about. So many ideas appeared in my head. I just couldn't wait to put them in my writing. Since I finished I really want to watch the movie Castaway.

Eating Insects.
WALT engage the reader by using interesting vocabulary.
Have you ever ate dead crickets before? Well Thursday morning it wasn’t an ordinary day. That morning we found out what we were doing I was scared. I couldn’t believe it we were eating dead crickets. We were having a PES Fear Factor.
Mrs Stickland said “On your marks get set GO”. I was too scared to touch or eat one. My friends grabbed one and just chucked it in their mouth. I was like are you serious, I kept repeating myself what does it taste like is it yuck. I was trying to force myself to eat at least one. But NO I didn’t.
I would like to try it but I just need time. I never knew my friends will just pick a dead cricket up and eat it. I would only eat one but not another. While I was sitting down I saw this boy Nytram just take a bunch and threw the entire crickets in his mouth. Next he puked.

Year 5/6 Camp 2017
Walt: write about our experiences on camp.
Have you been on the year 5 & 6 camp before, on your school ground? The year 5 & 6 slept in tents on Pt England school field we would sleep with 2-4 kids. We did all sorts of fun activities Killer Zone,Youth Town,Get Lost,Kayaking,Dance practice. This camp started in 1991 and it has now been running for 27 years.
Camp is when you explore and have fun and also sleep in tents. We had our camp in 2017 Term 1 week 6. We have camp’s because we need to use our beautiful environment outside our school that God have given us. We also have camp to have fun.
I like kayaking because it was funny when people fall of their kayak’s. I also enjoyed killer zone because we won. Sleeping was cool as well because I got lots of rest from my big day.
I would like to say a big thank you to Mr Burt for having this opportunity for us to have this fun camp. I would also like to thank the cook’s who cooked us beautiful dinner. Thank you to my mum for letting me go to camp. Thank you Whaea Saf for playing your guitar and cooking for us.
In the future I would love to got to the concert and see their dance moves. I have learnt a lot of fun games I could play at home. I am really excited to go to the year 6 camp this year.

Native Birds Non-Native Birds in NZ.
Walt: write persuasively
I think we need more native birds in Tāmaki and less non-native bird’s because New Zealand native birds are hardly seen in Tāmaki. I reckon it will be cool if I could see more kiwi’s in Tāmaki. I hope to see less non-native birds and more native birds in Tāmaki in the future.

I wish we had more native birds especially kiwi’s because I think they are well known. I like kiwi’s to be in Tāmaki because they are special. I think I should see kiwi’s in Tāmaki.

I think we should get less pigeon’s because they are annoying. They sometimes fly though our classroom. I also mostly see them instead of native bird’s. I wish I saw more native birds in Tāmaki
