Who dunnit?

Who DUNNIT?

In Room 4 we are solving a crime, someone had broken into a house with rare valuables lying around and shattered a window to get in. We had discovered little bits of cloth that was covered in what it looked like blood next to a broken window. We then had a look at the blooded cloth under a microscope and we found out that the red stuff on the cloth was actually blood. Looking at the CCTV footage there were at least 4 suspects so we decided to take a blood sample from each of them.

Each suspect had to take a blood test because we knew we had to find A+. Suspect 1 blood was A B+, suspect 2 blood was B and suspect 4 blood was 0. But looking at suspect 3 blood was different because their results were A+. We knew this because the blood on the ripped material turned out to be A+ so we were trying to find out what suspect blood is A+.

Task Description ~ This task was for Genomics and we had to actually find the suspect using chemicals but the blood wasn't real but we just called it Blood. Just a small group of us finished finding the suspect because the whole class couldn't handle it.

Six-Sentence Story (3 little pigs)

Six-sentence story
Walt - Create a narrative.
Sentence 1: Begins with ‘Once Upon a Time’ and introduces the main character
Sentence 2: Describes where the character lived
Sentence 3: Describes where the character’s special talent
Sentence 4: Describes the character’s problem
Sentence 5: Tells why the character felt that way
Sentence 6: Tells how the character solved the problem

Once Upon a Time, lived three chunky pigs.  They lived in a thick green, remote forest. The three of them were able to craft little huts out of three different materials - sticks, hay and bricks. Unfortunately nearby lived a dreadful, hungry wolf. Every time the dreadful wolf visited, he would huff and puff and blow down the two houses that were made out of sticks and hay by two of the pigs. So the two pigs bolted away to help their other brother build a brick home so the three of them would be safe from the big bad wolf.
Task Description: My task was to create a 6 sentence story. I chose to retell the 3 little pigs in my own way and in my own words.

Fair Trade!

Task Description: This week for math we were put into 5 groups of 4-5. Each
group were a country and we each had made up names for our country
from our teacher Mrs Stone. Each group had 5 things Coffee, Gold, Oil, Lumber and
Electronics. Well the whole point of this was we were playing a little trading game where we
could trade the items we had with the other groups to hopefully make profit. The aim of this game
was to become the wealthiest country out of the other 4 country's.

Looking at onion cells through a microscope (experiment

Aim: (On a slide are we able to see a clear picture of onion cells through a microscope)

Hypothesis: I think we will be able to see a clear picture of the onion cell at a magnification of 10x

Equipment:
  • 1 onion
  • 1 Slide
  • 1 Cover Slip
  • Tweezers
  • Blue Stain

Method: The first thing we had to do was get our slide. We then had to peel off a thin layer of onion skin. Then we carefully placed the thin layer of onion skin on the slide and made it flat so there were no lumps. Just to make sure we put 1 drop of saline on top of the thin layer of onion. So that we could see the onion cells on the slide through the microscope we put 1 drop of blue dye on the saline so it would be easier for us to see the onion cells

Observation/Conclusion: After adjusting the microscope so we can see the onion cells clearly. We finally got to see what onion cells look like. From what I could see they were very detailed like lots lines connected to each other in some way, in between the lines were dark purple dots but I think the funny looking dots were just the purple dye that we had applied on top of the saline or it was part of the onion cell but the dye had covered it
Image result for Onion Cells
Task Description- Today we got to do a little experiment. But before attempting the actual experiment, Mrs Stone told us to create a new document so we can write down our Aim on what were gonna attempt or see if what we're gonna do is gonna work. I also had to write down my hypothesis and equipment to make this experiment work. After attempting the experiment as you can see I wrote the method so you know how I made this experiment work. Lastly I wrote my observation or conclusion to show you what my results were overall.

What make's an effective leader?

Term 4, Week 1. Walt - Identify and use features of explanation writing.

What makes an effective leader? A true leader has a passion for a cause that is larger than they are, and their passion is leading others to do the right thing. Leaders have a lot of confidence because their confidence can help others have some confidence in themselves to do anything or be anything. To be an effective leader you have to be a good person, an effective leader would treat everyone with respect and would have good manners.

Firstly, a Leader's passion is being an effective leader. Well, some leaders have more than one passion, but they put a lot of hard work to be a good and effective leader. Leaders that have the passion to be good and effective cares about being a leader. And a Leader with a dream and a vision that will better society, or at least, some portion of it.

Secondly, Leaders with confidence can help others be more confident in a variety of situations. Like if your Leader or someone you follow that inspires you are very good at speaking in front of a large number of people and make it look so easy. Maybe one day their courage can help you have the courage to do the same. But not only that, Leaders have to be confident in themselves and others, so they can have confidence in others to help support them in whatever they're doing.

Lastly, being a respectful leader is one of the main things all leaders should be or have. All leaders have to have good manners, respect for everyone even if they don’t know them. An effective leader is always polite. Being respectful, kind, polite and nice makes you look like a very good person and it shows that you were brought up by your parents correctly.

All three points are very important to be an effective leader. Having a dream and a vision will help a better society if your passionate about doing the right things in being an effective leader. Having confidence in yourself so you can become or do whatever you like. Having good manners or respect towards everyone just makes you a good person. So, did any of these three points help? Would you like more information on, What makes an effective leader?

Task Description - This week we are practicing, Explanation Writing. Because next week Thursday we have our writing test and our main writing topic or genre is Explanation Writing. So this week we had to write about, What makes an effective leader? And I am a leader myself so I just took my three main points from what I know about what I have to do when I have to be a leader.

K-Pop History

Today we are learning about the K-Pop history and how K-Pop came to be. Before K-Pop was invented some Korean people wondered how they can make people from around the world like or want to listen to Korean music. So this man had this genius idea, to start up his own studio/company and find unique and attractive Korean men to be in a Korean bot band. But this guy wasn't the only one who had this type of idea. But there were also some restrictions and the Korean boys that were found on the street had to agree and sign a contract. There were some very strict rules on the contract and when they signed the contract they were pretty much saying, "you have full access to my life". If they broke the contract they could never rejoin to be a Korean star/idol. Their food/diet was very strict as well like they had to eat what their boss told them to eat.

But the main thing they had to find about Korean boys was that they had to be very attractive and it didn't matter if they could sing or not. If their boss didn't like the way they looked they would make them get plastic surgery but only if they had signed the contract, that was basically saying "you have access to my life". Now days most people from around the world listen to K-Pop because of how catchy the beats are and how creative their music videos can be. But I think that some people should still acknowledge the traditional Korean dance. Because some people from around the world think that K-Pop is Korea's traditional thing. So Korean people should try keep their traditional culture alive so they remember how their ancestors originally performed.

Should student have to wear school uniform?

Should students have to wear school uniforms? Uniforms have many drawbacks because they are not always affordable, creates more laundry with extra items to clean each week and they make everyone the same.

At Pt England School the school uniform is too expensive. The jacket is $49 - $54 dollars. It is about 40 dollars for a sport t-shirt, which is compulsory to wear when we do fitness, And the culottes/shorts are about $32. But in the year 7&8 / intermediate all the girls have to wear culottes which are about $47. So if we just wore the clothes sitting in our draw waiting to be used, it would help students families a lot more.

Reason number 2, I think here in New Zealand there are some poor students that only have 1 set of uniform, so they either wash their uniforms everyday when they get home from school, Or they wear the same pair of uniform at school for 5 days. Then on a Friday they would wash their uniform so it would be fresh and clean for the next week. So what I’m trying to pin is that if we just wear the clothes that are sitting in our draw it would be easier. And yes you would still have to wash your mufti clothes everyday but sometimes when schools have bright uniform and you keep washing it, it either fades or shrinks.

Some school staff, principals or teachers think wearing school uniforms help prevent to stop bullying. Because it makes everyone the same and some schools are so strict that your hair tie has to be your school uniform color or your socks have to black or white. Well at my school you aren’t allowed to wear hoops in your ears because they might get caught on something. But that’s not the point. The point is in my point of view is that teachers need to be harder on kids so they don’t bully and actually talk to kids and be more open to kids and be nicer to the kids who they think might need some actual help. Like talking to the kids who don't feel comfortable talking to their own families.

So overall I think students shouldn’t have to wear school uniform or some schools should even give students the option to wear school uniform or to wear mufti. So that if there is a school trip the teachers can tell the kids to wear their school uniforms so that the public can see what school is that. But back at school on normal days teachers or principals could give students the option to wear mufti. So here in NZ I think some schools uniforms prices are too high and some parents just can't afford it. Or school uniforms makes more laundry sometimes, or if you have 1 set of uniform every time you wash it, it starts to fade or shrink. I even think it's sometimes best to look different and just learn to accept people for who they are and teachers should teach that.

Task Description - Ms Tapuke gave Room 2 Literacy a topic and we had to look at the pro's and con's site that she had linked for us before writing our 3 main opinion. After looking at the pro's and con's we had to say if we agreed or disagreed with the topic/statement. Then we had to write our 3 main points on why we agree or disagree like a like brainstorm. Ms Tapuke helped me with my

Whats inside a cell?

What’s inside a cell?
SAY IT - NAME IT - LABEL IT

NUCLEUS: It is an organelle found in a eukaryotic cell. It is also known as the brain of the cell.

RIBOSOMES:  Are where RNA is translated into protein. The protein is called protein synthesis. Ribosomes also bound to endoplasmic reticulum.

CHROMOSOME: They carry all the information that helps a cell grow, thrive and reproduce. Chromosomes are also made up of DNA. Segments of DNA in specific patterns are called genes. Your genes also make you who you are.

GOLGI BODIES: Receives proteins and lipids (fats) from the rough endoplasmic reticulum. It modifies some of them and sorts, concentrates and packs them into sealed droplets called vesicles.

MITOCHONDRION: Are the working organelles that keeps the cell full of energy. They are also small organelles floating free throughout the cell.

ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM: This is also a type of organelle found in eukaryotic cells that forms an interconnected network of flattened, membrane-enclosed sacs or tube-like structures known as cisternae.

Morse Code

Did you know in New Zealand this week is math week. So in Math our teacher Mrs Stone put us into little groups I was with Naomi, Amelia and Jaylim so there were four of us. There were 7 groups altogether and after we found out what our groups were we were told to go to a table. Mrs Stone then came around the classroom handing out 3 papers, one paper had the key to solving the questions that were on the other 2 papers. I think it was fun working together as a team to work out the questions together.

Breakout in Maths!

Today for the last day of Maths Week we did a breakout. If you don't know what a breakout is click this link! We worked in our Maths week groups for this task as a team. I worked with Amelia and Hinerangi, Jaylim was busy and Naomi was at a tournament. In my opinion I had fun working this problem thing out.

KPMG Reflection

Today we got the opportunity to go to KPMG. My favourite part was the food because it was the first time the chefs did curly fries along with the curly fries there were mini burgers and like mini pizza bread. If you didn't know KPMG is Manaiakalani's main sponsor. KPMG is a multinational professional services network, and one of the Big Four accounting organisations.

When we arrived some of the KPMG staff introduced them self and then two lady's named Susan and Lucy talked to us about their job, Ecology. After they talked to us about what they do we had Scones with raisins in it for Morning Tea. Straight after Morning Tea we went for a little walk and visited this charity called Sustainable Coastlines. When we got there a they did a little presentation for us about what they do and more. When we arrived back to the KPMG building we did a little activity that we were given by a lady named Miro. Lunch then came so we had lunch then we completed our activity. When two o'clock came we started to pack up and got ready to go back to school.

Quick Write! What am I?

What Am I ?

Today I am describing a fruit or a vegetable without saying the name of the fruit or vegetable!
What am I ? I am round and I sometimes come in the color red sometimes in the color green.
I am a fruit and a lot of people like to eat me. When I’m green I’m sour when I’m red I’m sweet
and juicy. You can have me in a pie or a sponge you can make juice out of me and you can
eat me dry. I grow trees and when you pick me off a branch of the tree I have a little stick on
the center of the top of my head pointing up. I also don’t smell like much. People who have
odontophobia wouldn’t really eat me when I am solid.

Guess What I am in the comments section!!

Task Description - Before getting into our writing our teacher Ms Tapuke gave us a warm up. We had to describe a fruit or a vegetable in 5 minutes without saying the name of the fruit or vegetable. I did edit some bits and added on after the five minutes was up.

The Tree Of Life.

This is the tree of life.
We learnt that in 1835 Charles Darwin discovered that all living things are connected. Animals change over millions of years ago, so they can survive. Things at the bottom of the tree came before the things at the top.

Around The World

Our Task was to create a digital learning object (D.L.O) We had to draw our backgrounds
on the Hyper studio, Hyper studio is like an app on the i mac's where you can draw, trace and animate. I only had enough time to draw 2 landmarks. When we inserted our drawings onto scratch we had to find a sprite (character) to code. Like how I chose the brown bear, and then I made it move to where I wanted to go. While I was coding I had to record a voice over, I explained some facts about the landmark and where the landmark is located in the world.

Daring Decimals

Its the last week of school and we learnt how to convert decimals and how to add
and subtract decimals.  We also learnt how to change a fraction into a decimal then
into a percentage or a decimal into a fraction then to a percentage.

Inquiry - Tasting Food

Image result for KimchiToday for Inquiry in Room 4 we got to Kimchi which is a pickled cabbage from Korea. The Kimchi was pretty much like cabbage sitting in a bunch of chili sauce the sauce was very spicy, salty, flavory and garlicky. We also got a chance to try Pad Thai which is a dish obviously from Thai. In Thai they like to have their flavors balanced out equally their 3 main flavors are Salty, Sweet and Spicy. The Pad Thai definitely was delicious I really loved it, it tasted like pasta and chicken with a various of flavors.

Trying Foods.

Today in Room 4 we tried a delicious Empanada which is a traditional dish in Argentina. It is a pastry pocket fulled of meat. It looks like a sausage roll with a golden crispy pastry color. But it is like a flat dumpling shape. The mince is a brownie, red color because of the spice. The Empanada had Capsicum, Mince, Onion, Sugar and Spice filled in it.

My first bite I called taste the golden pastry on the outside and the sweet mince on the inside. The edges were crunchy and the sweetness overpowered the spice. I personally don't agree with the raisins being in this dish because it makes the Empanada too sweet.

The Empanada is originally from Europe in Spain. The reason this dish ended up in Argentina because Spanish people colonized Argentina.

North America and Europe Venn Diagram

What are the differences between North America and Europe? It all started when the Europeans colonized North America and brought their languages and food over to North America. Europe and North America traded in things they owned. European traded in their food like pizza and their language like Spanish, French and English. So now both countries have these things.

Task Description ~ In math's we have been learning what a equivalent fraction is and how to add fractions that have the same denominator. We learnt how to also find fractions of a whole set.

Trying Foods

Image result for feta cheeseImage result for Olive Oil in Jar
Today in Room 4 we got the chance to try Italian and French food. There was plates covering the table with Brochette Bread and with olive oil on top. There was also a piece of Feta cheese next to it with 2 dry black olives. In my opinion it was different and weird. I didn't get the chance to try the dry olives because the smell was too strong for me to try. So I gave it away to someone who likes olives. The Brochette was different as well and the oil had a strong taste. After trying that we had Pain Au Chocolat which literally means Bread with Chocolate this comes from France. In my opinion it was delicious.

Europe Slide.

This is my Europe slide from my, I like your latitude presentation. I chose the famous landmark the Colosseum which is in Rome because in Room 4 home class we have been learning about the Romans and what they discovered back in the day.  I also chose another popular landmark in Paris, France, The Eiffel Tower because it's a landmark that I would like to visit someday because of how popular it is.

Tantalizing Transformation.

Task Description ~ This week Room 4 Math's class has been learning to Transform shapesusing Reflection, Rotation and Translation.

Rata And The Totara Tree Review.

WALT: interpret figurative language and its effect on a text.

The Rata and the Totara Tree I read was retold by Katerina Te Heikoko Mataira. The genre in her version was fiction. The key things she shared was that ceremonies and rituals had to be properly performed to ask for the God’s permission. This story is about a man named Rata who was commanded by his chief to build a large canoe so his people can voyage. After Rata looked and looked for the tallest tree he finally came across a large Totara tree. He ordered the men with him to cut it down. The Next day it was back up not a scratch. It’s like as if it hasn’t even been touch.
