Maori people voyaged in their wooden wakas or sails, they voyaged thousands of miles away allll the way across the unknown Pacific Ocean.

  1. Kia ora Paikea,

Welcome to the Winter Learning Journey programme. We are thrilled that you have joined us this holiday!!

I hope that you learned a few new things about New Zealand during Activity #1. I must admit that I never realised that the European explorers were so worried about falling off of the 'edge' of the world that they rarely ventured as far south as New Zealand. We are fortunate that the Maori were brave enough to sail south, to find New Zealand and to settle here.

I wonder what New Zealand looked like when the first Maori arrived here. There would not have been any roads or buildings. It would have just been native bush, rivers, mountains and volcanoes. Imagine...

I hope that you'll continue blogging with us this holiday. I'm really looking forward to learning more about New Zealand through reading your blogs and to sharing the adventure with you!

    Let the journey begin...

    ~Rachel
